  1. Lis Video: In Depth
Our idea for this video came from the PEW 2004 study. We wanted to see if the figures from their study correlated to students here on the Madison campus. Based on all of the readings we’ve done this semester we realized that the easiest way to test the PEW data was to have a study of our own. We hypothesized that most students would be using their computers to visit entertainment sites like Facebook rather than using e-mail. We ended up being wrong but so was the PEW study. There was an even split between scholarly work and facebook use and hardly any e-mail use. We realize that the PEW study was made 5 years ago and our sample was relatively concentrated seeing as everyone we counted was a student; however, we feel the data we collected was still valid and interesting. In lots of the class readings people argued that computers are not necessities. It’s been claimed that owning one is like owning a Mercedes—nice but not imperative to survival. Our study showed that students aren’t just playing around on their computers. Students need computers for research just as much as they need it for social networking so it’s not fair to label internet access as an unnecessary good. In general our project was simply solidifying the idea that the digital divide is an important issue in our society because students need access to the information they seek.

  2. In this project I was a part of the filming process.I went to our group editing meetings and put together a summary of the project to make our concept more accessible. I was also a part of the brainstorming and development of ideas process.

  3. My participation in this project included thinking of some ideas for the video, shooting the original footage, and being in the original footage. However the original footage was lost when we tried to up load the video onto the computer. I also helped with some of the final touches on the video.

  4. First off, I want to apologize for the out of sync audio that occurs about half way through... technical difficulties. In the making of video, I was a part of the filming and editing process. I helped during filming in the search for facebookers and attended the group editing sessions. I also helped in the music selection... as ridiculous as it might be. As a final reflection on this project, I can definitely say that I was surprised at the results we got from doing our study. I thought facebook and other cyber entertainment would win by a landslide but it's a good thing my perceptions were proved wrong and that just as many people are studying and doing schoolwork!

  5. I help shoot our project and edited the film, as well as helped conceptualized our assignment & assign the music (Thanks Jenna for your diverse itunes Library!). We worked tirelessly in college library preparing the cuts, as well as constructing the seemingly easy but fairly complicated "scorekeeper" in the lower left hand corner. We sat and built this project off of a chart from THE DIGITAL DIVIDE AS A COMPLEX AND DYNAMIC PHENOMENON by J. Van Dijk & K. Hacker. On page 320,which gave us the idea to do a social experiment around computer usage on the UW Campus. It was a fun and entertaining process, with somewhat surprising results. Enjoy!

  6. In this project, I participated by helping think of some of the original ideas, shooting the original footage, and taking place in the original footage shot. Since we didn't use the original footage, I also helped out with the finishing of the new footage after it was shot and being put together and want to thank Rafael and Jenna for shooting the new footage!
