Group Video: Age vs. Technology

  1. So my involvement in making the film included going around asking people questions and filming the people in the video. One interesting thing I got out of this was that A) my prediction that younger people are more tech savvy was right and B) that when the two women answered that they thought they were a 7 on the scale we used, the older woman took twice as long to locate the contact as the younger one. I also was involved in the editing process and narration which was only new because the flipcam was a pain because of the amount of file manipulation I needed to do just to see a video.

  2. My participation in the video involved helping to come up with the order of the video segments, helping to organize what to say, and speaking during part of the video. One thing I took away from this project was a slightly better understanding of how to edit videos, though I just watched Chris doing some of the actual editing. Our chess example in the video is a real concern in my opinion. Todays children are growing up with technology involved in all aspects of their lives, and this does and will have some negative consequences. As shown, it can pull people away from society because they can now find various forms of entertainment alone at home using technology. So technology advances with its many benefits, comes with a price.

  3. My participation in the video was going around with Kit and Chris to find people to ask questions about my iphone and also helping develop the questions that the people were asked. I also worked with Chris and Kyle to come up with the order of which the ideas were found in the vide as well as the script. I was also one of the people whose voice was recorded. As for the reflection on this experience, I learned that it the way certain segments are arranged in a video is important in order to make sure your message is properly conveyed to the audience. I also learned that even though technology can be very helpful when it comes to things like having an iphone, it can also, like our chess example shows, make people lose touch with interacting face to face with ohter since technology now makes many things available to people without the need for human contact.

  4. Our video was meant to show that some of the many abstract issues we've dealt with in class have a tangible impact on the real world. Changing technology requires a level of awareness and learning that is hard to keep up with. My participation involved coming up with some of the scenes in the movie and some of the overall ideas we wanted to express. I had a great time working with my group and think the video turned out great!

  5. My part in our video project included shooting the chess segment with the elderly, asking passer-bys for their participation, and interviewing our participants as well. I learned a couple things myself 1) How to use an i-phone through watching the volunteers. 2) The consequences of technology and its role in diminishing community bonding. I myself choose to "chat" with people through text messages or messenger than through the phone and in-person. I believe many of the younger generations are like myself and when viewing the chess example, we are able to see the different values.

  6. For our video project, my main role was doing background research and finding the media videos used in the first part of our videos that illustrate the media's stereotypes on age and technology. I also helped determine the order of our video and the main points we wanted to communicate for our project. This project was a really fun experience for me, and I liked how we were able to do something other than just focus on the readings. It allowed me to see how the articles and the topics we have covered are a part of our everyday life. I especially like the end of our video because it weighs in on the possible advantages and disadvantages of the new technological world. All members put in a lot of effort and I think the result is a great video on technology today.
